What is Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, can occur following the experience
or witnessing of what the individual perceives could potentially be a
life harming event. The word perception is very important, it is how the
individual perceives the situation that determines his or her response
that is why each person has to be evaluated separately. The memory of
the incident is automatically linked to overwhelming negative emotions
and this pattern is stuck in a psychological loop. Whenever the person
thinks of or is reminded in any way of the incident it is as if it is
happening in real time.
PTSD is marked by clear biological changes as well as psychological symptoms. It is also associated with impairment of the person's ability to function in social or family life and can affect occupational instability, coping ability and work/life balance.
Symptoms
- Reliving the experience
- Nightmares and flashbacks
- Difficulty in sleeping
- Feeling detached
- Depression
- Memory problems
- Lack of interest in activities
- Mood swings/outbursts
- Unable to interact socially
- Avoidance of related information or activity
- Avoidance of same or similar situations
- Hyper Arousal
Most people
who are exposed to a traumatic stressful event experience some of the
symptoms of PTSD in the days and weeks following exposure. In some cases
the mind and body heal themselves with time. Chronic PTSD usually involves
periods of symptom increase followed by remission or decrease then a resurgence
of the symptoms. For some individuals symptoms may be unremitting and
severe.
Treatment
Using MindSlide Technology™ and pattern breaking techniques clients can dissociate the memory from the emotion and then therapeutic intervention enhances the natural healing processes. Resolution from the most severe symptoms is often found in just 1 session with 2 or 3 further sessions to release underlying issues and learn positive coping strategies. Each client receives a MindSlide Technology™ self help manual for on going support.
